
IR vs. Hot Air: Picking Your Poison for BGA Rework
Ever tried pulling a BGA chip off a smart grid controller and felt like you were fighting the board? It’s a stressful spot to be in. You’re trying to get those solder balls to melt, but you’re terrified of scorching the PCB in the process. Most shops just lean on hot air. But here’s the problem: air is honestly pretty terrible at moving heat. It hits the top of the chip, gets the surface nice and toasty, but the solder joints underneath? They stay cold. You end up with this awkward temperature gap that makes the whole process a gamble.
The Magic of Infrared
This is where Infrared (IR) comes in. Unlike hot air, IR doesn’t need a “middleman” to move the heat. It uses electromagnetic waves that actually dive right into the packaging. Instead of heating from the outside in, the heat starts happening inside the silicon and the solder. Because of that, the solder balls underneath reach that melting point at the same time as the surface. No more worrying about the “popcorn effect” where the chip basically explodes from uneven heating. It’s just… cleaner.
Why I Prefer IR Over Air
There’s another thing. Hot air pushes. If your vacuum pickup isn’t perfectly locked in, that chip is going to slide. It’s a nightmare. IR is silent and motionless. No wind, no shifting, and way fewer messed-up pads. Plus, you aren’t wasting energy heating up your entire workshop just to fix one board. The heat goes exactly where it needs to go.
The Catch (Because there’s always one)
Now, IR isn’t some magic wand. It has its quirks. Some materials just don’t like IR. If you’re working with a glossy solder mask or a heavy copper ground plane, the waves can bounce right off. You’ll end up with “cold spots” that refuse to melt. The trick to beating this? Use a pre-heater. Get the whole assembly up to about 150°C first, then hit it with the IR lamp. It keeps the board from warping and stops the thermal shock from killing your components. It’s an extra step, but it’s the only way to sleep soundly after a rework job.
