
Getting Quantum Fabrication Right with IR Heating
When you’re building quantum chips, the usual rules for semiconductor heating just don’t work. You need a level of precision that makes standard gear look clunky. That’s where shortwave infrared (IR) lamps come in. They basically act as the bridge between the old-school electronics world and the wild requirements of quantum substrates. The Power Struggle Here’s the thing: when you move from macro-electronics to the quantum scale, you can’t afford to wait around for things to warm up. You need heat density that hits the target now. We use high-wattage quartz tubes because they ramp up incredibly fast. By pushing high voltage through a short-wave filament, you get a concentrated blast of energy. It’s great because you can heat the wafer exactly where you need to without turning your entire vacuum chamber into an oven. But you have to be careful. If you crank the wattage without a solid heat sink to balance it out, you’re going to warp your substrate. And that’s a nightmare nobody wants. The Nitty-Gritty on Materials We don’t use standard glass. It just won’t hold up. Instead, we go with high-purity quartz envelopes to keep outgassing from ruining everything in the cleanroom. To get the energy to actually soak into the chip layers—rather than just bouncing off the surface—we apply special coatings to the tubes. It’s all about tuning that wavelength. For the connectors, we stick with R7s or Sk15. Why? Because they’re simple. When a lamp eventually burns out in the middle of a production run, you can just pop a new one in and keep moving. No drama. Making it Work in the Fab If you’ve used convection ovens, you know the lag is a killer. IR lamps fix that. You get direct energy transfer, which means your surrounding equipment doesn’t get baked. Just keep in mind that these lamps run hot. Really hot. Your wiring and housing need to be tough enough to handle constant thermal cycling. And please, check your cooling loop. If it isn’t built for the ambient load, your lamp life is going to tank.
