
Let’s Talk Carbon Fiber Infrared Heating
Ever tried to heat something deeply without accidentally torching the surface? It’s a tricky balance. That’s exactly why we build our carbon fiber far infrared (FIR) tubes. Instead of using those old-school tungsten filaments you find in halogen lamps, we use a carbon fiber element tucked inside a quartz sleeve. It’s a different approach that just works better for certain jobs.
How the heat actually works
Here is the deal: when current hits that carbon fiber, it puts out radiation in the 2.0 to 4.0 micron range. Now, that sounds like textbook talk, but all it really means is that the heat “fits” perfectly with organic materials and polymers. It sinks in deep. You can pick the voltage and wattage that fits your setup. But a word of caution—don’t just crank the wattage to the max. If you push too much power into a short tube, you’ll get hotspots. And hotspots lead to burnouts. Simple as that.
The build and the “gotchas”
We use high-purity quartz for the glass. Why? Because we want that heat to fly right through the tube, not get trapped in the glass. But here is where people usually trip up:the seal. Whether you’re sliding these in or bolting them down with a flange, that seal has to be airtight. If even a little bit of air leaks in, the carbon fiber will oxidize and snap. It’s a heartbreaking way to ruin a good tube.
The trade-offs (because nothing is perfect)
These tubes give you a “softer” heat. It’s great for PET or plastic films because you aren’t constantly worrying about melting your product. The catch? They aren’t instant. You won’t get that immediate “snap” of heat you get from a halogen lamp. You’ll need to tweak your timers to account for that little bit of lag while they warm up. One last tip: check your wiring. These tubes can handle the heat, but your connectors might not. If your wiring gauge is too thin for the current, things will get way too hot where they shouldn’t. Use the right wire, and you’re golden.
